“Papa” Joe Driessen Passes at 78

The Blue Dukes Nation extends its most heartfelt condolences to the family of Dukes Alumnus “Papa” Joe Driessen, who passed quietly in his sleep at 78-years-old on November 7, 2020 in Phoenix, AZ.
Driessen left his mark on the Dukes’ gridiron. He played for the Dukes on the 1959 squad (#22), and went on to father two sons, who also played for the Dukes (“JP” Driessen ’90, “Bullets” Driessen ’92).
A close friend of storied Coach Jim Tietjen, he was a significant booster of the football program throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, and regularly hosted pre-game dinners for the players.
