Dukes Thrash Spartans

The Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes returned to the win column on Friday night, grabbing a 28-12 victory over the West Bend West Spartans on Senior Night at Lubar Stadium. The win moves the Dukes to 2-3 in conference, keeping their playoff hopes alive with two games remaining.
The Dukes never trailed as they went 77 yards on the opening possession to grab the lead early. A 3rd down conversion and 4th down conversion were pivotal in keeping the drive moving before Harry Bortolotti punched it in from 6 yards out.
The Spartans responded by putting together a 16-play drive that finished in the end zone early in the second quarter. They would fail to convert the extra point, however, so the Dukes still led 7-6.
Bay was able to steal the momentum right back on the ensuing kickoff. Senior Wyatt Van Dyke found a seam on the return and took it to the Spartans 40 to give the offense great field position. Bortolotti went up the middle for 4, then up the middle for 3, and then up the middle again for a 33-yard touchdown run to give the Dukes a 14-6 lead midway through the second.
West was able to put together another drive that went into Dukes territory. Facing 4th-and-12 from the 28, the Spartans quarterback was flushed out of the pocket and took a hit from PJ Mahoney and Kaben Ziegler while letting the ball out, falling well short of the intended target and giving the ball right back to the Dukes.
A methodical 16-play drive from the Blue Dukes followed as the offensive line asserted their dominance to grab a 21-6 halftime lead. Bortolotti put an exclamation point at the end with his 3rd touchdown of the first half with seconds left on the clock. Bortolotti ran for 261 yards on an eye-popping 36 carries.
Both teams came up empty on their first possessions of the second half before the Spartans ripped off another 16-play drive that ended with a touchdown on a 4th-and-2 from the 14. The Dukes led 21-12 after a failed 2-point conversion.
A failed onside kick gave the Blue Dukes great field position and they started the drive on the 49-yard line of the Spartans. Facing 3rd-and-7 from the 10, senior Joseph Lee took a sweep around the left side and scampered into the end zone for the score.
Freshman Mace Miskel lead the Dukes defensively with 10 total tackles (9 solo). Senior John Dorsey added 7 (6 solo) and juniors Tosin Kolawole and Robert Grano each added 6.
